The constitutional amendment was approved by parliament on Monday. Sulyok criticizes the amendment, but says in a video on Facebook that he has no legal right to question it and is therefore willing to approve it.

The country's new Prime Minister Péter Magyar has described Sulyok as former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's "puppet." He welcomes the president's announcement.

Viktor Orbán, on the other hand, says that “the last barrier has fallen” and that “tyranny is no longer a threat, but a fact.”

Sunday is scheduled to be Sulyok's last day in office according to the constitutional amendment.

Parliament Speaker Agnes Forsthoffer is expected to become interim head of state until parliament elects a new president within 30 days.
