The company, a leading actor in the niche that in the USA is called "breastaurants", filed for bankruptcy in Texas on Monday. The restaurant chain has debts of 376 million dollars, equivalent to approximately 3.7 billion kronor, and is trying to manage the debt by selling all its company-owned restaurants to a franchise group supported by the company's founder.

Hooters has been struggling with rising debts and fewer visitors to its restaurants for some time.

When the news of Hooters' impending bankruptcy leaked in February, it led to reactions on social media in the USA from, among others, top athletes who appreciate the restaurant's concept, reports Fox Business. For example, NBA player Devin Booker writes on X: "Plz don’t go @Hooters".

The name Hooters has a double meaning in the USA. On the one hand, it is a slang term for women's breasts, and on the other hand, it is an allusion to the sound made by the owl in the company's logo.
