The injury problems began during the Finnkampen last year and continued during the pre-camp for the World Championships in Tokyo, where Larsson experienced pain in his groin and inner thigh. Two weeks after the World Championships semi-final in the 200 meters, the sensations worsened during a light jogging session.
An X-ray in October initially showed a minor tear, but when the symptoms did not subside, a follow-up MRI was performed. It showed a stress fracture in the left femoral neck.
"It's sad of course, but my main goal is the European Championship in mid-August, so it would feel stupid to stress," the 26-year-old says in a statement.
The exact cause of the injury is unclear.
"I haven't had any pain when I've been standing still or walking, and if I had been a regular exerciser I would probably have been in full training by now, but it becomes a problem when you're going up and down at almost 42 kilometers per hour," says Larsson.
The European Athletics Championships will be held in Birmingham between August 10 and 16.
