Hearing damage in Sweden is increasing, shows a Novus survey conducted on behalf of the Swedish Hard of Hearing Association (HRF) – which now wants to see hearing screening for all over 50 years.

Approximately 1.8 million Swedes suffer from a hearing impairment. Both the number and the proportion of people with hearing impairment are increasing gradually. The injuries are also increasing in younger age groups.

"Many wait far too long to seek help and that means a major health risk", says HRF's chairman Jonas Sahlberg in a press release.

A national screening program is proposed by HRF which will offer hearing tests with a "digital, scientifically validated self-test that can be done at home, on a mobile phone or computer".

"It's a simple, cost-effective way to capture care needs and make a big difference for both the individual and society", says Sahlberg.

The study consists of two sub-studies, conducted in February and September, with 1,600 and 1,300 respondents respectively in a representative sample of people from 18 years and upwards.
