For residents of Greenland, 2026 begins the same way as last year - with statements from the US president about wanting the island at all costs. How long have we been hearing that? Nothing has happened. "I am not afraid," says Sørine Pedersen from her home in Aasiaat in southwest Greenland.

She belongs to the group of Greenlanders who want Greenland to become independent from Denmark, but not to become part of the United States.

She takes Donald Trump's new statement that the US "absolutely needs Greenland" with a pinch of salt, also considering that he has made good on his threats to intervene militarily in Venezuela.

Of course, it's never nice when someone talks over your head. No one wants their land taken away from them, but so far nothing has happened, and I think people are tired of getting all worked up about this.

Polarized question

But not everyone is keeping a cool head. A taxi driver in Nuuk, who wishes to remain anonymous because the issue is so polarizing, sees Trump's new statements as an unpleasant escalation in a troubled time.

We're of course thinking about what he could come up with, and this is not good. He's shown he's crazy enough. We can only hope he doesn't do anything idiotic.

Not afraid of war

Angutimmarik Berthelsen, who lives in Sisimiut, has previously expressed support for Trump and still believes that it would be better if Greenland were part of the United States instead of the Rigsfællesskabet (the commonwealth of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands).

I don't agree with the rest, namely that there should be an annexation by force, Berthelsen says, and then answers a rhetorical question about whether he thinks it could happen:

It's not that I'm afraid of war or a military invasion. We don't even have weapons to defend ourselves, so there's nothing we can do anyway, but it definitely stirs up emotions because people here want to avoid conflict.

Creates conflict

On a personal level, Berthelsen is most worried that Trump's recurring interest in Greenland will create conflict between residents.

People have very different opinions, and in some families it has gone so far that people don't talk to each other about this. It's something I've experienced myself.
