It will be easier for employees to find out how much colleagues in equivalent jobs are paid. The aim is to address unjustified pay differences, primarily between men and women.

The proposal from the government and Minister for Equality Nina Larsson (L) is now being submitted to the Legislative Council for review. It is based on an EU directive on pay transparency.

"Wage discrimination must end. Equal pay should apply regardless of gender," says Nina Larsson in a press release.

The difference in pay between men and women was just over 10 percent in 2024, of which almost half (4.6 percentage points) could not be explained.

The proposals include that employers must tell potential employees what the starting salary is for the job. An employee should, upon request, have the right to know what the average salary is for employees who perform equivalent work.

The rules are proposed to take effect on July 1 this year.
