Gothenburg city wants to break the violence spiral among young people and prevent the violence from creeping down in ages. Now the municipality introduces an emergency school for middle school students who risk being recruited by the gangs.

”There is no ’quick fix’ to break the violence spiral – to break the long-term new recruitment, we need to ensure that children and young people in the risk zone receive help and support in time”, says Jonas Attenius (S), chairman of the municipal board in Gothenburg, in a press release.

Previously, there has been an emergency school for high school students. Now, one is also being introduced for middle school students who are at risk of being drawn into criminal networks. There, the child can stay for around a month and the whole family can receive support. Then, a new assessment of school placement is made, but the efforts for the child continue.

”It's about quickly breaking negative spirals and equipping children – and their families – for a better future”, says Attenius.

From January, social preschool teams will also start, which will support the staff and management of preschools. The teams will reduce the risk of school failure, mental illness and exclusion.
