The French tennis profile Gaël Monfils announces via Instagram that he will quit after the season 2026. "Life is too short", writes the veteran.

The 39-year-old has won 13 titles during his career and became in January the oldest ATP champion ever when he won Auckland Open at 38 years of age.

Injuries have however plagued him in recent years and he was recently forced to interrupt Chengdu Open due to an ankle injury.

"Life is too short. Believe me when I say that I have no regrets. What I do feel is that I have been lucky, incredibly, ridiculously much luck. I have been allowed to play during a golden era of tennis, side by side with Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray", writes Monfils on Instagram.

The Frenchman reached as far as the semi-final in a grand slam on two occasions, 2008 in the French Championships and 2016 in the US Open.

Monfils defeated as recently as 2024 world number one Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati. He also has two Stockholm Open titles on his list of merits and has been trained by the Swede Mikael Tillström.
