Lallican has worked to portray the consequences of Russia's war in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion in 2022. His works have been published in major European newspapers such as Le Monde, Le Figaro, Der Spiegel and Die Welt.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, which took place on Friday morning at 9.20 local time, are not yet fully clarified, writes International Journalists' Federation IFJ in a statement.
The organization describes the incident as a "war crime", and notes that "it is the first time a journalist has been killed by a drone in Ukraine".
France's President Emmanuel Macron states that it is a Russian drone.
"Our compatriot, photojournalist Antoni Lallican, was following the Ukrainian army on the resistance front. It was with great sorrow that I heard he was killed, a victim of a Russian drone", writes Macron on X.
A Ukrainian journalist is also reported to have been injured in the attack.
"Both journalists were wearing protective equipment and bulletproof vests marked with 'Press'", writes IFJ.
