Titmus chose to take a break after the Olympic Games in Paris. Now she has decided not to return to swimming.
"I have realized that things in my life that have always been important are now more important to me than sports", she writes on Instagram.
In total, it became eight Olympic Games medals for Titmus over the games in Tokyo and Paris.
Her greatest triumph came in Paris, where she won the most talked-about final in the Olympic Games pool. Titmus defeated Canadian prodigy Summer McIntosh and American star veteran Katie Ledecky to defend her gold on 400 meters freestyle.
Now the medal hunt is over and she ends her career with four Olympic Games gold medals. Two on 400 meters freestyle, one on 200 meters freestyle and one in relay.
"It was a tough decision but I'm very pleased with it", writes Titmus.
Until June, Titmus had the world record in both 200 and 400 meters. The latter was beaten then by Summer McIntosh. Her world record on 200 meters freestyle from the Olympic Games qualifications 2024 (1.52,23) still stands.
