The Social Democratic Alliance party, led by Kristrún Frostadóttir, receives 20.8 percent of the votes according to the Icelandic TV and radio company Ruv. All votes had been counted by Sunday afternoon.
Thus, the party gets 15 of the 63 seats in the parliament.
The Alliance (the Alliance) is the clear winner in this election, it is clear. In my opinion, we should get a mandate to form a government immediately tomorrow, said newly elected member Dagur Eggertson on Sunday.
The result means that the party more than doubles its support compared to the previous election in 2021, when it received 9.9 percent.
There will be a change in the governance of this country. It is clear, said party leader Frostadóttir at an election vigil – but emphasized at the same time that the votes are still being counted and that no result is final.
Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson's three-party government, consisting of the Green Left, the conservative Independence Party, and the center-right Progressive Party, resigned in October after deep divisions.
Benediktsson's Independence Party becomes the second-largest party with 19.4 percent. Next comes the Liberal Reform Party with 15.8 percent.
According to preliminary results, the Green Left loses all its parliamentary seats since the party does not reach the five-percent threshold, and the Pirates also seem to be out of parliament.
