The government will introduce mental health education in schools. "It is another piece of the puzzle for preventive work to ensure that young people feel good," writes Minister of Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (KD) in SvD Debatt.

Forssmed points out that several reports in recent decades have shown rising levels of mental illness in children. Forssmed also refers to the World Health Organization (WHO), which recommends teaching about mental health in schools.

"Now we can add another piece of the puzzle to the health promotion and prevention work - namely the announcement that the government will introduce mental health into the curriculum," writes the Minister of Social Affairs.

The Swedish National Agency for Education will be tasked with developing new curricula for the 10-year compulsory school, where knowledge about mental health will be included in the subjects where it is relevant.

"For example, it could be - with different focus and emphasis - within the framework of the subjects biology and physical education and health," writes Forssmed.
