In a decree from the Islamist movement Hayat Tahrir al-Shams (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, 49 individuals are named as high-ranking officers in the country.
al-Sharaa is also Syria's leader since HTS, together with other rebel groups, overthrew dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime earlier in December.
Among the 49 selected are officers from al-Assad's armed forces, as well as several former rebels.
Two will receive the rank of general, five brigadier generals, and around 40 will become colonels. They are to, among other things, "modernize the military" to "guarantee security and stability", according to the decree.
According to the London-based conflict monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a handful of foreign jihadists who fought on the rebels' side are also included.
These include, among others, an Albanian, a Jordanian, a Tajik, a Uyghur, and a Turk. The latter is said to have led the Turks who fought on HTS' side in the civil war.
