Late on Sunday evening, Israel's military IDF confirms via Telegram that they were behind the attack and states that it was aimed at a "Hizbollah terrorist" who was located "near civilians in contravention of the understanding between Israel and Lebanon".
"As a result of the attack, several innocent civilians were killed. IDF regrets all forms of harm inflicted on innocent individuals", they write further and state that the incident is under investigation.
The state news agency National News Agency reports that the raid, which took place near Bint Jbeil, was aimed at a motorcycle.
Lebanon's president calls the attack a "massacre", while Unicef Lebanon condemns it as "deeply shocking".
"Attacking children is conscienceless. Children should never have to pay the price for a conflict with their lives. The violence must cease immediately to protect all children", writes Unicef Lebanon in a post on X.
Despite the fact that Israel and the Iran-backed Shia militia Hizbollah agreed to a ceasefire in November last year, Israel has continued to repeatedly bomb targets in Lebanon, mainly in the southern parts but also in the capital Beirut. Israel also has several outposts in southern Lebanon, in contravention of the agreement.
On Thursday, the Lebanese military stated that Israel had breached the ceasefire 4,500 times.
