Finland's World Championship dream was essentially extinguished at Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam. The Netherlands were too tough and took a major victory with 4–0.

Finland would have needed to defeat the Netherlands away.

A difficult task that early on became almost impossible. Already in the 17th minute, the home team led 2–0.

Aston Villa's Donyell Malen shot 1–0 via Finnish goalkeeper Jesse Joronen in the eighth minute and Liverpool's defensive giant Virgil Van Dijk headed in the second in the 17th minute.

It also became 3–0 before the break through Memphis Depay on a penalty. Cody Gakpo established 4–0 in the second half.

The Netherlands leads the World Championship qualifying group with 16 points, six ahead of second-place Poland, who play later on Sunday evening.

Finland is on the same points as Poland, but only has one match left to play, against last-place Malta. Even if they win there, it looks hopeless to knock Poland off second place.

Poland also has a meeting with Lithuania this evening and then has the Netherlands and Malta left to play.

The Netherlands has a grip on the group victory with a superior goal difference of 22–3.
