EU member states formally approved the autumn agreement on Monday morning to gradually phase out all gas imports from Russia. This will happen in stages, with imports of liquefied natural gas to stop by January 1, 2027, at the latest, while the last deliveries via pipeline will stop by November 1 of the same year.
However, Hungary and Slovakia, which both voted no on Monday, have threatened to go to court to overturn the decision.
In connection with the decision, the environmental organization Greenpeace demonstrated against expectations that European countries will instead increase their gas imports from the United States.
"The EU must not simply replace this gas with gas from other tyrants," writes activist Thomas Gelin in a press release.
