Just weeks before the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada is set to start, a suspected scandal is unfolding within FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association).
Paraguayan Alejandro Domínguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) and one of several vice-presidents of FIFA, is accused of corruption. Together with another high-ranking Conmebol employee, Domínguez is alleged to have received $5 million, equivalent to around SEK 47 million.
The money is said to be linked to payments made in connection with the 2015 FIFA scandal.
A whistleblower who claims to have direct knowledge raised the alarm and reported it to FIFA's ethics committee. According to the New York Times, FIFA has known about the report for over a year.
Neither Domínguez nor FIFA has responded to the newspaper regarding the complaint. Conmebol says the federation was not aware of it.
