Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to play in Portugal's World Cup debut next year after the International Football Association Board (FIFA) made the superstar's suspension conditional.

Ronaldo has already served a one-match suspension after being sent off in the World Cup qualifier away to Ireland two weeks ago, after an elbow in the back of the opponents' Dara O'Shea.

Normally, such a sending-off would mean a three-match ban, which would have meant Cristiano Ronaldo would miss the opening World Cup in North America next summer. But Fifa “solved” that problem on Tuesday, by giving him a three-match ban, with the remainder suspended.

"If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another similar or equally serious infringement during the probationary period, the suspension will automatically be re-implemented, meaning that the remaining two matches must be served immediately," FIFA said in a statement, according to the BBC.

According to BBC information, the reason the punishment was mitigated was partly because the red card was Cristiano Ronaldo's first in 226 international appearances.
