A few hours after Wilders cancelled a planned radio debate, he wrote on X that he had been informed of the threat by the Dutch security and anti-terrorism authority NCTV.
”NCTV sees no ’remaining threat’ but I have a bad feeling and therefore I am interrupting all my campaign activities for the time being”, Wilders writes.
NCTV has not commented on the matter.
It was on Thursday that Belgian authorities arrested three people suspected of planning an ”Islamist terrorist attack on political persons” with bomb drones. Belgian authorities have not mentioned any names, but information suggests that Prime Minister Bert De Wever was one of the politicians who would be killed in the attack.
The controversial Geert Wilders, who leads the immigration- and EU-critical PVV, has had constant police protection since 2004 after being repeatedly threatened with death.
On October 29, there will be a parliamentary election in the Netherlands, where PVV is currently leading the opinion polls. PVV also became the largest party in the 2023 election with just over 23 percent of the votes, but jumped out of the four-party coalition that has led the country this summer – which led to the upcoming new election.
