A left-wing extremist group claims responsibility for the arson attack on cable lines in Berlin that left tens of thousands of households without power.

In a letter, the left-wing extremist so-called Vulkangruppe has claimed responsibility for the arson attack near a power plant in the Berlin-Lichterfelde district on Saturday, reports public service channel RBB.

The target of the action is said not to be the power outage itself but the fossil fuel industry. The police consider the letter authentic.

The group has claimed similar attacks before, including in 2021 when an electrical cable supplying power to the construction of a Tesla factory was damaged.

Around 45,000 households in southwest Berlin were left without power due to the outage on Saturday. The damage is extensive and around 35,000 households are not expected to have power restored until Thursday, according to grid operator Stromnetz. Many are also without heat as the local heating system is affected by the outage.
