The bill for Västlänken is estimated to be significantly higher than expected. Now the Swedish Transport Administration wants to extend the congestion tax in Gothenburg by seven years.

An extension of the congestion tax by seven years, until and including 2044, would according to the Swedish Transport Administration finance half of the cost increase for the commuter train tunnel, while the state would cover the other half.

The proposal, which is included in the plan for the new national transport infrastructure, however receives sharp criticism from the politicians in Gothenburg.

"I assume that the government already today rejects this unanchored and tone-deaf proposal from the Swedish Transport Administration", says the chairman of the municipal board Jonas Attenius (S) in a press release.
