At 01.39 at night between the 22nd and 23rd of September 2023, an area several hundred meters long east of E6 suddenly began to move.

Several cars and a bus drove down or got stuck in the landslide area when the earth masses pushed the motorway in front of them. Three people were slightly injured.

A stretch of about 400 meters of E6 was destroyed, at the same time as a gas station and other buildings in the vicinity suffered major damage.

A draft of the report, where excavated masses dumped east of E6 were pointed out as the cause, was known earlier this year.

Now the conclusions are confirmed.

The fill masses were the direct cause. It resulted in an overload, which caused the clay to collapse, says investigation leader Alexander Hurtig.

Much rain

An underlying cause of the landslide occurring in the fall of 2023 was that it had rained a lot. At the same time, shortcomings among others in the municipality are pointed out as contributing factors.

We see shortcomings in Stenungsund municipality's comprehensive and detailed planning regarding landslides, erosion, and landslides, says Alexander Hurtig.

The geotechnical investigation that was the basis for the detailed plan was, according to the investigation, inadequate.

The earthworks also deviated from the earth permit at several points. The masses were deposited partly outside the property boundary and significantly higher than allowed.

At the western property boundary, the filling was up to ten meters above the intended ground level, says Alexander Hurtig.

The exploiter and contractor did not take sufficient control and safety measures with regard to the prevailing ground conditions.

Several suspects

Previously, three people have been served with suspicion of gross general negligence, gross negligence and unauthorized environmental activities.

Prosecutor Daniel Veivo Pettersson stated last week that he expects to be able to make a decision on a possible prosecution after the summer.

We have been waiting for this message. We are far ahead in our investigation, but have been waiting for the report to be able to take the next step, he told TT.

(TT) The landslide occurred at 01.39 on September 23, 2023, at E6 in the height of Stenungsund. It covered an area of approximately 400 by 600 meters and resulted in extensive damage to the road and nearby buildings.

A total of seven vehicles drove into and down into the landslide area. Several people were injured, though not seriously. At the same time, several trucks that were parked at a rest stop in the vicinity were damaged.

In March 2024, the prosecutor, prosecutor Daniel Veivo Pettersson, announced that three people are suspected of gross general negligence, gross negligence and unauthorized environmental activities. The investigation is ongoing.

On July 3, 2024, King Carl XVI Gustaf inaugurated the repaired road section and on July 5 at 6 am, traffic was released again.

The final bill for the reconstruction was, according to the Transport Administration, approximately 550 million kronor. In addition, Stenungsund municipality has estimated that the landslide has resulted in costs of approximately 270 million kronor for the municipality.
