Tomas Tobé, who is also an EPP vice-chairman, is visiting Budapest to assess the reforms implemented since the change of government.
“Viktor Orbán’s dismantling of democracy came to an end when Hungarian voters elected a new government in April. Since then, Hungary has taken important steps in the right direction. This must also have consequences for how the EU treats the country,” Tomas Tobé said in a press release.
The Article 7 procedure means that a country that violates fundamental rules and values can ultimately lose its voting rights.
Ending the process is not a free pass, Tobé stressed. The EU must continue to monitor Hungary’s reform efforts.
