After the agreement with Mercosur countries in South America, EU leaders are now hoping for a trade agreement with India.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa will travel to India on January 27 for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"India is a crucial partner for the EU. Together, we have the capacity and responsibility to protect the rules-based international order," Costa said in a press release.

Negotiations on a trade agreement between the EU and India were restarted in 2022. On Wednesday, von der Leyen reportedly told members of the European Parliament that an agreement can now be signed but would exclude agriculture, the news site Euractiv reports.
