Is the Chinese e-commerce giant Shein too addictive? And has the company taken the right measures after the sex-doll scandal? The European Commission is now launching an investigation.

"In the EU, illegal products are prohibited - regardless of whether they are sold from a store shelf or an online marketplace," says Henna Virkkunen, EU Commissioner for Digital, in a press release.

The investigation is being conducted within the framework of the EU's DSA regulation. It will, among other things, evaluate Shein's system for restricting the sale of illegal products, such as the child sex dolls discovered in France last fall.

Investigators will also examine what is described as the site's addictive design, where consumers receive points when they take action, as well as its recommendation system.

“We take our obligations under the DSA seriously and have always cooperated fully with the European Commission,” Shein said in a comment.
