The independent, government-critical channel was denied an extension of its FM broadcasting license four years ago, with authorities citing, among other things, shortcomings in the program schedule and poor finances.

However, the European Commission has taken the matter to court; the court has now concluded that the Hungarian authorities' actions have been far too disproportionate.

"Hungary has violated freedom of expression and information," the court writes, among other things, in its press release.

Club Radio's head Andras Arato condemned the 2021 shutdown and saw it as a way to further silence the opposition in the country.

"Shameful and cowardly," Arato told the AFP news agency.
