Citizenship in EU countries cannot be sold to individuals who promise large investments or other sums of money.
The EU Court of Justice has ruled in a verdict that strikes down Malta's disputed system of offering citizenship in exchange for investments of at least SEK 6.5 million.
In a press release, the court believes that the system in principle makes citizenship a "purely commercial transaction" that does not make it possible to establish a sufficient "bond of solidarity and loyalty" between the country and the citizen.
The verdict comes after the EU Commission took Malta to court in 2022 after the country refused to change its legislation.
