I hear your proposal to list the cormorant as a game species in the EU. We can look at this, but I want to first discuss further with you whether this is really a way that would reduce the administrative burden, says the EU's Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall at a meeting with the member states' ministers of agriculture and fisheries in Brussels on Tuesday.
First and foremost, she instead promises dialogue with the parties concerned and updated guidelines for how member states can make exceptions from the protection of the cormorant to keep the population down.
The issue on Tuesday had been raised by Sweden, which is one of several EU countries that are concerned, not least over the large amount of fish taken by the growing population of cormorants.
