In exchange, they want to have lower customs duties within sectors that are important to the EU, including medicines, alcohol, semiconductors, and passenger planes.
Additionally, they want Washington to adjust quotas and introduce exemptions in order to practically reduce the 25 percent customs duties on cars and car parts and the 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum products.
According to the sources, the EU Commission believes that such an agreement would be acceptable, even though it would be more beneficial to the US than to the EU in their eyes.
Earlier on Monday, the EU's Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic announced that he will travel to Washington this week to negotiate before the deadline set by US President Donald Trump, July 9, and the tariff pause expires.
