He won the World Championship gold in Budapest two years ago and left Paris as Olympic champion last summer. Ethan Katzberg's latest victory was hardly surprising. On the other hand, the monster throw of 84.70 – the longest in two decades.

I did not know it was a championship record until just at the end, but to hold it is really big, says the Canadian to SVT.

The 23-year-old with a mustache from the areas around Edmonton dominates the hammer throw, now more than ever.

He felt a little extra pressure on him after his compatriot Camryn Rogers' gold in the women's competition.

Katzberg's giant throw in the second attempt secured the gold in Tokyo. The Canadian's series was also something out of the ordinary – 82.66, 84.70, 82.01, 81.86, 83.07, 83.73.

For the first time in a World Championship in 18 years, throws of over 82 meters were required to take a medal.

German silver medalist Melrin Hummel achieved a personal best of 82.77, Hungarian and bronze medalist Bence Halasz threw 82.69.
