When Eric Johansson scored the last goal of the match, the ball was travelling at 126 kilometres per hour. The goal sealed Sweden's victory over Slovenia at 35–31 and the Blues and Yellows got off to a perfect start in the middle round of the European Handball Championship in Malmö Arena.
"Yes, I did," said the left back with a smile.
The Kiel star managed six goals in seven attempts.
I'm of course happy with my own performance. I found a good flow straight away and it felt good.
“Never doubted”
Johansson said after the opener last weekend, when he scored six goals against the Netherlands (36–31), that he has sought help from a sports psychologist. This is because he has had a hard time in some championships.
I want to show Sweden what I can do. It's something I've been working on off the field. I want to show all the fans what I can do. I've never doubted my abilities. Because I know what I can do. It's just a tool to make it easier.
Do you think there is any difference in this championship compared to the ones you have played in the past?
It's clear that if you play well, you get more confidence. The last two or three championships I haven't performed at the level I want to.
Johansson scored two goals against Georgia (38–29), but against Croatia (33–25) he scored five goals and now six goals against Slovenia.
“Not surprised”
National coach Michael Apelgren, who is in his second championship, has always believed in Eric Johansson.
It's great that he's realizing his potential. This is what's inside him, said Apelgren, adding:
I'm not surprised but very happy for him that he gets to show what's inside him even to the Swedish audience now that we're in the middle of a championship.
Sweden is the only team in the middle round in Malmö with the maximum of four points. On Sunday, Iceland (two points) awaits at Malmö Arena.
