We could have had a Swedish Olympic medalist in the downhill. Emma Aicher, who was raised in Sundsvall, took silver for Germany.

In the shadow of Lindsey Vonn's dramatic crash, the women's first Olympic alpine competition was decided by hundredths of a second.

Emma Aicher took silver, just four hundredths of a second behind American gold medalist Breezy Johnson.

But Aicher could have competed for Sweden.

She grew up in Sundsvall and attended a ski high school in Järpen, writes Expressen.

Aicher has a German father, and at 16, she began competing for his home country.

She received an offer with fantastic opportunities in Germany. It was very undramatic. It was an incredible chance for Emma, mother Viktoria Lindstrand Munkby told Expressen.

Home skier Sofia Goggia took bronze.
