Twelve states have sued President Donald Trump and his administration to get a court to declare that his new tariffs on foreign imports are illegal, reports CNBC.
"The President does not have the authority to raise taxes through a whim, but that is precisely what President Trump has done with these tariffs", says Letitia James, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the state of New York, in a statement.
Besides the state of New York, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont are also plaintiffs in the lawsuit, reports AP.
Since Trump took office, he has introduced a range of tariffs on foreign imports through presidential decrees, including 145 percent tariffs on products from China and 25 percent tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico.
The lawsuit was filed with the US International Trade Court in Washington.
