The Eiffel Tower in Paris was evacuated on Christmas Eve after a short circuit in one of the elevators, French media reports.
Just before 11 am, the fire alarm went off, and around 1,200 people had to leave the building while technicians and firefighters investigated the cause of the short circuit.
It was soon established that there was a technical problem in one of the elevators between the second and top floors, according to the state-owned SETE, which operates the Eiffel Tower. However, the message was that the tower would reopen during the day and admit visitors gradually.
"No visitors were put in danger," SETE writes.
The Eiffel Tower has over seven million visitors each year.
