Europe Heatwave Breaks June Records and Disrupts Daily Life

The heatwave continues in Europe. In Spain and Portugal, new heat records for June are being reported. In France, nearly 2,000 schools are closed and in large parts of Italy, outdoor work has been prohibited during the hottest hours.

According to Le Monde a red warning – the highest – for heat has been issued in 16 French regions. To facilitate in the heat, 30,000 water bottles will be distributed in the capital's public transport at the same time as 90 water fountains will be available, according to the French operator RATP.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris was closed on Tuesday and around the country, about 2,000 schools are completely or partially closed.

”The government's responsibility”

In connection with a crisis meeting, France's Prime Minister François Bayrou stated that the Ministry of Education will open discussions with the country's mayors about the lack of air conditioning in many schools.

It is the government's responsibility to present a long-term plan to adapt to climate change, said Bayrou according to Le Monde.

In Spain, a two-year-old has died after being left in an overheated car for several hours. In Italy, two deaths have been reported due to the heat, according to the British BBC.

More than half of Italy's regions have introduced a ban on outdoor work during the hottest hours, writes The Guardian.

Several June records

According to the Spanish weather institute Aemet, a new heat record for June was set. The average temperature was 23.6 degrees – 0.8 degrees above the previous June record, which was set in 2017.

Portugal also set a heat record in June. According to the country's meteorological authority, the highest daytime temperature, 46.6 degrees, was recorded on Sunday in Mora, about ten miles east of Lisbon.

The previous record was 44.9 degrees and was measured in 2017 in Alcácer do Sal.

Also in the Netherlands, Belgium, and large parts of Central Europe, the mercury has soared upwards.

And in England, the warmest June month since official temperature measurements began in 1884 was recorded, according to the country's meteorological authority.
