The police in Dublin clashed on Tuesday evening with around 1,000 people who demonstrated outside an asylum accommodation in the southwestern parts of the city.

The demonstrators had gathered outside the residence after allegations against one of the residents of having committed sexual assaults against a ten-year-old girl.

Irish flags and signs with immigration-critical messages were waved by the demonstrators.

A police car was set on fire and demonstrators are said to have thrown bricks, glass bottles and fireworks at the police. Tear gas was used to disperse the crowd and six people were arrested.

The suspected perpetrator appeared in court earlier on Tuesday. The crime is according to Ireland's Prime Minister Micheal Martin "very, very serious".
