The agreement will be signed at a summit within the Southeast Asian association Asean held in Malaysia on October 26-28.
Trump "looks forward to witnessing" the signing of the peace agreement, says Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan on Tuesday. According to Hasan, the US and Malaysia will jointly work for the agreement to become even more comprehensive and also include the clearing of landmines and the withdrawal of military from the border area.
Sporadic violent incidents have occurred between Thailand and Cambodia over the past 15 years, but this year the relationship between the neighboring countries has deteriorated sharply. In May, a Cambodian soldier was shot dead at the border, and at the end of July, the border area, where two ancient temples stand, was ravaged by five days of intense fighting that claimed at least 35 lives.
On July 28, the countries agreed to a ceasefire, but both sides have accused each other of violating it. Donald Trump has written on social media that he called the countries' leaders to urge a ceasefire and for the war to end. The conflict is one of at least seven that Trump claims to have brokered peace in.
