Certain dog breeds are affected more often than others by skin tumors, according to a new study from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

The dog breeds that, according to the study, are more often affected by the skin tumor mast cell tumor (MCT) are dogo argentino, boxer and bullmastiff. The dog breeds cavalier king charles spaniel and jämthund seem, according to the study, to be affected the least by skin tumors.

Researchers do not know for certain why some breeds are affected more often than others. Henrik Rönnberg, professor of veterinary medicine and one of the researchers, tells SR's Vetenskapsradion that the knowledge can help detect tumors in time.

I think it is important that you maybe become more aware within certain dog breeds to go to health checks, especially when the dog starts to become middle-aged and older.

Over 600,000 dogs were included in the study.
