The Swedish navy detects Russian submarines in the Baltic Sea almost every week. It is very common, the navy's chief of operations Marko Petkovic told The Guardian.

The Russian naval presence in the Baltic Sea has increased significantly in recent years. A new submarine is being built every year in St Petersburg and Kaliningrad, Commander Marko Petkovic tells the British newspaper.

And if there is a peace agreement or ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, that presence will increase further, he believes.

"We expect Russia to increase its capacity in the region. And with that said, the Swedish Navy needs to continue to grow and focus on the overall situation," says Marko Petkovic.
