An existing dental crown was to be removed but came loose during a dental visit in Sala. It was captured by suction, but the patient accidentally inhaled the crown.
The person went to the emergency room the next day for respiratory problems, and an X-ray showed that the dental crown was stuck in the right lung.
The crown was removed under local anesthesia. It was then discovered that the lung had an incipient bacterial infection, for which the person was treated with intravenous antibiotics.
The incident, which occurred in January this year, is classified as a serious health care injury in a report to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate.
