The Danish government will conduct a rapid analysis of whether nuclear power can fit into the energy system. Since 1985, nuclear power has been taboo in Denmark.

Climate Minister Lars Aagard (M) says that the analysis, which is due to be completed this summer, will provide a picture of what preparations are needed for private stakeholders to be willing to move forward. This includes, for example, laws, financing and where the waste could be disposed of.

Aagard says he is approaching the analysis of how energy should be produced with an open mind.

- "I agree with those who say that solar and wind should play a major role in supplying electricity, but it can't be just that," he says.

According to Aagard, smaller modular reactors, so-called SMRs, could be interesting - not large ones like those existing in Sweden. Today, biomass is the weather-independent source in Denmark.
