Denmark is buying 16 American fighter jets and investing 27.7 billion Danish kronor, equivalent to approximately 41 billion Swedish kronor, in the Arctic and North Atlantic, reports Ritzau.

The agreement that the government and the defence committee entered into on Friday allocates 29 billion Danish kronor for the purchase of aircraft of the F-35 type.

In total, Denmark will have 43 F-35 fighter aircraft.

The investments in the Arctic and North Atlantic are made in close cooperation with the Faroe Islands and Greenland and include a new headquarters for the Arctic Command in Nuuk – a unit within the Danish defence that handles the monitoring of Greenland – and an underwater cable between Greenland and Denmark.

Furthermore, the agreement includes the purchase of two additional Arctic vessels, several drones and maritime surveillance aircraft.

The decision comes two weeks after unidentified drones penetrated Danish airspace. At the same time, however, EU countries are considering replacing the American aircraft with European alternatives, according to the news agency AFP.
