I today, women hold 22.9 percent of minister posts in the world's governments. Last year, the share was 23.3 percent. According to UN Women, it is the first documented decline in the share of female ministers.
FN-organ's numbers also show that there are 27 countries led by a woman today, while 103 countries have never had a female leader.
The number of governments consisting of half women and half men has fallen to nine. Last year, there were 15 countries.
“We see a trend of increased setbacks for women's rights and representation in the world. This when we should need to increase women's influence and self-determination,” says Ulrika Grandin, Secretary General of UN Women Sweden, in a press release.
There are some regional differences. In governments in Europe, Latin America and North America, the share of ministers who are women is around 30 percent, while it is only nine percent in governments in Central and South Asia.
