"Danes are price-sensitive and go where they can save money," Deputy Director Claus Bøgelund Nielsen says.

When Sweden reduces food VAT from 12 percent to 6 percent on April 1, Bøgelund Nielsen believes Danish traders will be disadvantaged, since Danish customers are already traveling to Sweden to shop because of the exchange rate.

In early March, he was furious about the Öresund Bridge campaign encouraging people to go to Sweden to get "much more for your money."

"We think it is bad style for the Danish state to maintain a food VAT of 25 percent while the Öresund Bridge operator carries out that kind of advertising," Bøgelund Nielsen says. He believes Denmark should follow suit and lower the VAT.
