There is a significant avalanche risk, with dangerous conditions in three mountain areas, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's Avalanche Forecasts website.

The avalanche danger is serious and difficult to manage on the western slopes of the southern Lapland mountains, as a large amount of drift snow has accumulated on a very weak base.

"The area at altitude closest to the tree line, both a bit up on the bare mountain and down in the forest, is the most dangerous," the site says.

In the southern Jämtland mountains, which include Åre, skiers can easily trigger avalanches in steep leeward formations when sensitive drift-snow slabs have formed.

The same applies to the western Härjedalsfjällen mountains, where there are also problems with persistent slabs on steep southern and eastern slopes.

The avalanche forecasts are currently valid until Friday at 6:00 p.m.

Significant avalanche danger means a three on the five-point scale.

Avalanche danger is rated on a five-point scale:

1. Low danger. Conditions are generally safe. Snow may be unstable in isolated places. Avalanches unlikely.

2. Moderate danger. Hazardous conditions in parts of the terrain. It is possible for people to trigger avalanches, but spontaneous avalanches are unlikely.

3. Significant hazard. Hazardous conditions. Human-triggered avalanches are likely and spontaneous avalanches are possible.

4. High danger. Very dangerous conditions. Spontaneous avalanches and human-triggered avalanches are very likely.

5. Very high danger. Human-triggered and spontaneous avalanches are certain to occur.
