This applies to the western Härjedal Mountains, the southern Jämtland Mountains, the southern Lapland Mountains, the western Vindel Mountains and in Abisko/Riksgräns Mountains, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's Avalanche Forecasts website.

The avalanche danger there is significant - a three on a five-point scale.

Skiers and snowmobilers can trigger avalanches in snow drifts, which can in turn cause weakened deeper layers of snow to release and make avalanches unexpectedly large.

The most dangerous areas are flats on the leeward sides of the mountains, and terrain below steep slopes should be avoided.

Snow drifts have created difficult conditions for some time, and numerous avalanches have already occurred.

In the Kebnekaise Mountains, the avalanche danger is considered moderate.

The forecast is valid until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Facts: The avalanche scale

Avalanche danger is divided into a five-point scale:

1. Low danger. Conditions are generally safe. Snow may be unstable in isolated places. Avalanches are unlikely.

2. Moderate danger. Hazardous conditions in parts of the terrain. It is possible for people to trigger avalanches, but spontaneous avalanches are unlikely.

3. Significant hazard. Hazardous conditions. Human-triggered avalanches are likely and spontaneous avalanches are possible.

4. High danger. Very dangerous conditions. Very likely to have spontaneous avalanches and for people to trigger avalanches.

5. Very high danger. Human-triggered and spontaneous avalanches are certain to occur.
