On Monday, the airline, Russia's largest, was forced to cancel 64 flights to and from Moscow's major airport Sheremetyevo. Aeroflot referred to a "failure in the IT system", but two hacker groups – one Ukrainian and one Belarusian – took responsibility for the attack.
In a joint statement, the groups write that they "successfully carried out a long-term and large-scale operation" that resulted in "a complete destruction of Aeroflot's internal IT infrastructure".
The problems for the airline continued on Tuesday with 22 cancelled departures and over 30 cancelled arriving flights, writes Kyiv Independent.
Disruptions in air traffic have become common in Russia since the country launched its attempt at a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, often due to Ukrainian drones in the airspace. But this is the first time a cyberattack has caused such major disruptions.
The Russian prosecutor's office says it has launched a criminal investigation, and calls what happened an attack by hackers, reports AFP.
