The British government is tightening grant rules after the Kneecap controversy. In the future, applicants' social media accounts will be reviewed, writes Arts Professional.

Kneecap was approved for a UK government tour grant in 2023, but it was withdrawn citing the controversial Irish trio's "anti-UK" stance.

The Irish rappers took the matter to court and won in November 2024.

The regulations for touring grants from the Music Export Growth Scheme have now been updated – and tightened. Applicants must now ensure that they will not “discredit” the system for three years before and three years after the grant is approved, and their social media accounts will be reviewed.

Crimes that may disqualify applicants include terrorism, violent and sexual crimes, and fraud.
