The presidential pardon comes over six months after the three men and over 30 other people were sentenced to death for the failed coup in Congo.
It was on May 19 last year that a group of plotters allegedly wore military uniforms and attempted to take control of the capital Kinshasa. Several people were killed when security forces opened fire.
The pardon comes simultaneously as Congo-Kinshasa negotiates with the USA to reach a mineral agreement. In exchange, Congo will receive security support to combat rebels in the conflict-ridden eastern parts of the country.
The coup attempt was led by Christian Malanga, who opposed Felix Tshisekedi and was killed during the coup attempt. One of the Americans is Malanga's 21-year-old son, who in court claimed that his father had forced him to participate.
