An appeals court in Colombia has overturned the ruling against former president Álvaro Uribe.

Uribe was sentenced in August, despite his denial, to twelve years of house arrest for witness tampering and obstruction of justice.

According to the court, the sentence had, among other things, "structural weaknesses". The decision can be appealed to Colombia's Supreme Court.

During his time in power, 2002-2010, Uribe conducted a comprehensive military operation against the Farc guerrilla, with which his successor later signed a peace agreement.

The case against him concerns suspected links to paramilitary right-wing groups and Uribe was accused, among other things, of having bribed imprisoned militia members to withdraw their testimonies about him.

Uribe's party has previously stated that he will run in next year's election to Colombia's parliament, if he is allowed to do so by law. The original sentence included an eight-year ban from politics.
